Abstract: Bilateral Logic and the Pragmatic Maxim

I will begin by presenting a simple system of logical proof for the propositional calculus, which is much easier to learn and master than those typically taught in introductions to formal logic. After discussing some pedagogical virtues of this system, I will then relate one of its distinguishing features, namely, its bilaterality, to various expressions of the Pragmatic Maxim given by James and Peirce in the early 1900s.  As I will explain, this bilaterality allows us to re-imagine the various clusters of concepts that lie at the very heart of the formal study of logic.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided but attendees are free to bring their own libations and contribute to the snacks. There will a reception immediately following the talk.
